Last month, China’s Cyberspace Administration imposed restrictions preventing companies from acquiring Nvidia’s H20 chips, much to the dismay of Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang. This development came on the heels of a tumultuous series of events that transpired over the summer.
Following an intense lobbying effort throughout the year, which included a high-profile meeting between Huang and then-U.S. President Donald Trump in early 2023, Nvidia secured export licenses in August. These permits allowed the company to ship downgraded versions of its chips to China, unlocking a significant backlog of orders that had been stalled due to geopolitical tensions.
