Faster or tougher? You can’t have both, particularly when it comes to electronics where “ruggedized versions” often come with compromises. Seagate’s LaCie is aiming to provide both with its upcoming Rugged SSD Pro5 model, announced at CES 2020.

The press release and initial retail listing state that these 2TB and 4-TB portable drives with LaCieโ€™s rugged, impact resistant exteriors offer read speeds of up to 6,700MB/s, and write speeds of up to 5,300MB/s. This is assuming that you are using it with a Thunderbolt 5 compatible device. While it may not be the fastest drive, it’s the fastest one you can get for a drive designed to bounce off of a Jeep in the hinterland without complaint.

LaCie claims that the design is “resistant from drops up to three meters, and is IP68 dust and waterproof.” These drives also come with a 5-year limited warranty as well as Rescue Data Recovery Services in case of catastrophic loss. LaCie claims that the drives are perfect for “filmmakers and audio specialists who work in the most challenging environments.”

Rugged SSD Pro5 will be available for $400 in 2TB capacity, and $600 in 4TB capacity later this month.
