Sora 2 clones flood the App Store in all countries

The Surge of Sora App Clones Flooding the App Store

Users outside the United States and Canada are encountering a wave of imitation apps mimicking OpenAI’s Sora application, attempting to capitalize on its growing popularity.

Familiar Pattern: Clone Apps Exploiting Trending AI Tools

Tech commentator John Gruber from Daring Fireball recently highlighted the presence of an app titled “Sora 2 AI Video Generator” on the App Store. This app has rapidly climbed the charts, currently holding the 9th position in the “Top Photo & Video Apps” category.

A deeper search for “Sora 2” reveals approximately a dozen apps bearing similar names, many of which misleadingly use OpenAI’s branding elements. One app even features the official OpenAI logo as its icon, while another references Google’s Veo 3 in its subtitle. These apps frequently push in-app purchases and often impose steep weekly subscription fees.

Why This Happens and How Users Are Affected

This phenomenon is not new; popular AI tools often attract a swarm of copycat apps. Since OpenAI’s official Sora app is currently restricted to users in the US and Canada, international users are vulnerable to downloading these counterfeit versions, mistakenly believing they are accessing the authentic product.

Protecting Yourself from Fake AI Apps

To avoid falling victim to these imposters, always verify the developer’s credentials and download apps only from official sources. OpenAI’s genuine applications are exclusively available through their verified channels.
