Epic Games’ latest court victories against Apple and Google have brought Fortnite one step closer to a comeback in Australia. The Federal Court of Australia ruled that Apple and Google had violated local competition laws by abusing their market dominance in the way they operated their app stores. Apple and Google charged 30% in-app fees, which were cited as a key example of limiting competition.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Fortnite would be returning to iOS devices in Australia through the Epic Games store very soon.
While the latest ruling was a big win for Epic, it rejected some of its claims, including allegations of consumer law breaches and “unconscionable behavior” by Apple and Google. Apple and Google released official statements, both companies disagreeing on the court’s ruling against their billing policies and anticompetitive claims.
The Federal Court of Australia is handling both cases simultaneously, and the 2,000+ pages verdict will not be made public for now.
