OpenAI Wants the U.S. Government To Use ChatGPT

OpenAI has just struck a deal that will give every federal executive agency access to ChatGPT enterprise over the next 12 months for only $1.

The following is a description of the aforementioned. OpenAI stated in a blog postthat the deal was meant to advance an important pillar of the Trump Administration’s AI Action Plan, by making advanced AI software widely available throughout the federal government. This will reduce paperwork and bureaucracy. The White House announced the plan on July. It outlined efforts to accelerate AI adoption and expand data center infrastructure. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a press statementthat “one of the best ways to ensure AI works for everyone” is to put it into the hands of those serving our country. “We are proud to partner with General Services Administration (GSA), helping to deliver on President Trump’s AI Action Plan to make ChatGPT accessible across the federal government and help public servants deliver for American people.” The GSA added ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini to a government-wide purchasing system on Tuesdayto make it easier for agencies and their customers to purchase and use these models.

The partnership, in addition to the steep discount and the training provided to agencies to learn how to use ChatGPT, also gives them access to tools. OpenAI has created a dedicated community for government workers as well as offering tailored introductory workshop through its OpenAI Academy. OpenAI has also assured that data from government, including inputs and outputs will not be used for training or improving its models. The company claimed that Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees who used ChatGPT in a pilot program saved an average of 95 minutes per day for routine tasks.

In January, OpenAI released ChatGPT Gova customized version of ChatGPT for government workers. OpenAI reported at the time that over 90,000 users from more than 3,500 federal state and local government agencies sent more than 18 millions messages using ChatGPT. The company highlighted that some agencies were already using ChatGPT. For example, the Air Force Research Laboratory uses it to perform administrative tasks and Los Alamos National Laboratory uses it for scientific research.

This move comes at a time when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is increasingly cozying up to the Trump Administration. Altman has been meeting with President Donald Trump since the beginning of his second term. He joined him for a press event and a one-on-one in June. Altman was called “a very brilliant person” by Trump during a dinner held at Trump’s New Jersey Golf Club that month.
