Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta and co-founder of the company, is sharing his vision for “superintelligence” in a new video.
Zuck’s New Plain Text Note was posted today on the internet (full text below). Zuck writes: “Over the past few months, we have started to see glimpses that our AI systems are improving themselves. The improvement is slow, but undeniable. Developing superintelligence has now become a reality.”
Then he goes on to explain his vision for superintelligence, including how it should be personalized, in line with Meta’s other products, such as Facebook’s AR glasses, WhatsApp’s Threads, and the AR glasses and VR headsets. All of these allow users some level of customization.
What I find most interesting is the distinction Zuck makes against “others who believe superintelligence should focus on automating all valuable tasks,” which seems to be a thinly veiled shot at OpenAI, his own rival. Artificial general intelligence (AGI, ), a precursor of superintelligence, is a “highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at the most economically valuable tasks.”

Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI and CEO, stated at a recent conference in Washington, D.C.,that AI will cause entire categories to be “totally, completely gone”citing customer service as an area where automated AI systems are likely to dominate. Zuck, however, offers a different vision to counter this:
“At Meta we believe that people pursuing individual aspirations has always been how we have made progress in expanding prosperity, science and health. This will become more important in the future… The rest of this decade will likely be decisive for determining whether superintelligence is a tool to empower individuals or a force that aims to replace large swaths society. Meta believes strongly that building personal superintelligence empowers everyone.” Zuck said in a video that was posted on X, as well as other social channels: We believe in putting superintelligence into people’s hands so they can direct it to what they value. Some of it will be about productivity, but much of it could be personal.
It’s actually quite similar with the vision shared by Altman said on his website nearly a year ago: We’ll soon be working with AI that will help us accomplish much more than what we could do without AI. Eventually, we can all have our own personal AI team full of virtual experts who are experts in different fields, working together to create anything we can imagine. Altman wrote again on his blog: ” [We(theentireindustrynotonlyOpenAI)arecreatingabrainforaworldItwillbeeasytouseandhighlypersonalized;itwillbelimitedonlybygoodideasThe”ideaguys”havebeenridiculedbythetechiesinthestartupworldforalongtimeThesearepeoplewhohadagreatideabutwerelookingforsomeonetohelpthembuilditIthinkthey’reabouttogettheirdayinsun
OpenAI has many things to offer, but we are first and foremost a superintelligence company. We still have a lot to do, but the majority of the road ahead of us is lit and the dark areas are fading fast.“
These competing visions of Superintelligence may be more similar than they appear to be. Read Below: Zuck’s complete note
Personal superintelligence
In the last few months, we have seen glimpses of our AI system improving itself. The improvement is slow, but it’s undeniable. The development of superintelligence is within reach.
In the coming years it seems clear that AI will improve our existing systems, and enable the discovery and creation of new things not imaginable to us today. It is still unclear what we will do with superintelligence.
This will be a new age for humanity in some ways, but it is also a continuation of historic trends. In 200 years, 90% of the world’s population was farmers who grew food to survive. The advancements in technology have allowed many people to focus on their chosen pursuits and less on subsistence. Each step has seen people use their newfound productivity to achieve greater things than they could have imagined, pushing the boundaries of science and medicine, as well spending more time on culture, relationships, creativity, and enjoying life.
Superintelligence will accelerate humanity’s pace of progress. Superintelligence can also empower people to make a difference in the world.
While the impact of AI on the future may be profound, a more meaningful impact will come from each individual having a superintelligence. This will help you achieve your goals, create the world you want to live in, have any adventure you desire, be a better ally to those you love, and grow into the person you aspire. Meta’s vision is that everyone will have personal superintelligence. We believe that people should have the power to direct this power towards what they value most in their lives.
This differs from other industry players who believe that superintelligence should be aimed at automating all valuable tasks, and then humans will live off a dole. Meta believes that people pursuing individual aspirations has always been the way we have made progress in expanding prosperity, science and health. This will also become increasingly important in the near future. Meta’s focus is on the intersection of technology with how people live, and that will only grow in importance.
As trends continue, you can expect people to spend less and less time using productivity software and more and more time creating, connecting, and creating. The most useful superintelligence will be a personal one that understands us, our goals and can help us achieve these goals. Our primary computing devices will be personal devices such as glasses that can understand our context by seeing what we see, hearing what we hear, or interacting with us throughout the day.
The benefits of superintelligence are to be shared as widely as possible. Superintelligence will also raise new safety concerns. We will need to be ruthless in mitigating these risk and careful about the open-source software we choose. We believe that empowering people is essential to building a free society.
This decade will likely be decisive in determining whether superintelligence is a tool to empower individuals or a force that aims to replace large segments of society. Meta is committed to building a personal superintelligence which empowers everyone. We have the resources, the expertise and the will to deliver the new technology to billions across our products. I’m excited about focusing Meta’s efforts on building this future.
